Pricing Your Branded Gelato

The last three weeks we did not publish a newsletter because Ajit was traveling in Europe in his first long tourist trip. A lot of gelato was consumed. In his quest for deep pricing research Ajit made a point to consume the Giorgi Armani gelato in this pic for 13 Euro, procured in Cannes. In his travels the avg cost of the smallest portion of gelato was 3 Euro. This serving was a third of the general standard. Depending on how you look at it the premium for gelato at this brand was ~5x or 15x if you also account for portion size. This excercise reveals both the power of branding as well as segmentation. The right buyer doesn't think twice about the expensive gelato, in fact they will exhibit veblen behvaior if the price was too cheap. We had recently made a video that the price of a literal brick marketed by Supreme had shot up to $3000. The TLDR is this: pricing research that eliminates brand effects is going to be very limited and shows the importance of positioning and branding for otherwise undifferentiated produdcts.
